  1. Botulism is a rare, often fatal type of food
  2. poisoning. Symptoms include vomiting, 
  3. diarrhoea, muscular paralysis, breathing 
  4. difficulties and disturbed vision. It is 
  5. caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium
  6. Clostridium botulinum, which is found in 
  7. soil and sometimes in improperly canned 
  8. foods. Thorough cooking destroys the toxin, 
  9. which otherwise suppresses the cardiac and 
  10. respiratory centres of the brain.
